Airstream trades in aluminum for a sleek new fiberglass trailer
airstream — the company who brought the pop culture travel icon, ‘silver bullet,’ into the world — is launching a new, fiberglass trailer, airstream nest. starting at 45,900 USD, nest represents a new chapter in airstream’s 90-year story of transportation design.
‘there’s really nothing else like it,’ says airstream president & CEO bob wheeler. ‘nest acknowledges airstream’s lasting legacy, while anticipating a new potential for outdoor adventure.’
conceived by oregon designer robert johans, nest was acquired by airstream in march 2016 and further developed in-house, where johans was brought on as project manager. ‘we saw the acquisition of nest as an opportunity for airstream to curate the kind of good design we feel is essential. nest is modern, it’s functional, and it’s innovative in a way you rarely see in this industry,’ says CEO wheeler.
nest’s semi-monocoque fiberglass structure was styled by automotive designer bryan thompson (who also worked on airstream’s iconic basecamp model). the exterior features a low and wide front-windshield — inspired by the iconic shape of ski goggles. six windows, a skylight, and a vertical doorway-window let light light pass through nest seamlessly, as if the inside and the outside of the vehicle were one in the same.
inside nest, modern design details hide ample amounts of storage. premium fixtures, a two-burner stove, a microwave, and a contemporary bath equips travelers with homey comforts. additionally, two available floorplans give consumers flexibility with their travel needs. one plan offers a U-shaped dinette that converts into a bed; the other plan features a permanent bed with a plush tuft & needle mattress.
at 3,400 pounds, nest is easy to tow and is priced from $45,900. airstream dealers nationwide have already started receiving inventory.
