Cambodia to build one of the world’s largest Airport


The Government of Cambodia has approved the proposal to build one of the world’s largest airports in south-eastern Kandal province. The US$1.5 billion investment proposal from Cambodia Airport Investment to build two new airports in Kandal Steung district and Siem Reap this year year.

A 2,600ha airport would be the ninth-largest airport in the world, ranking just below the United States’ Chicago O’Hare (2,610ha ) and well above China’s Beijing airport (2,330ha). The current Phnom Penh International Airport is about 400 ha.

According to the document, the OCIC will invest US$280 million, while unspecified “foreign banks” will provide US$1.1 billion in funding. Last year Cambodian authorities have signed an $880 million contract with Chinese companies, allowing the latter to build a new international airport in Siem Reap this year year.

“The project will need a long time (to materialise) because we need to negotiate on many criteria, on the frameworks of the agreement,” spokesman for the SSCA,said,

Cambodia is expecting 7 million tourists to visit Cambodia by 2020, generating 5 billion U.S. dollars in revenue and creating 1 million direct jobs, according to Tourism Minister Thong Khon.
