iPhone 8 Plus Has the Best Smartphone Camera in the World: DxOMark
Now that the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are in the market, one of the main things we want to know is how good the camera on the phones are. Considering the iPhone 8 Plus is one of Apple’s latest flagships, we expect a stellar camera. Photography benchmarking site DxOMark expected the same.
iPhone 8 Plus: Camera specs
Like the iPhone 7 Plus, this model features two cameras — a 12MP wide-angle main camera, and a 12MP telephoto shooter for special effects and better zooming capabilities. Again they haven’t included optical image stabilisation in both lenses but only the main camera.
Along with Portrait Mode, a new addition is Portrait Lighting, which gives users studio-style lighting to their portrait shots making them more vibrant than before.
Other highlights on the iPhone 8 Plus Camera
- Optical zoom alongside digital zoom up to 10x
- Portrait mode as well as the new Portrait Lighting which is in beta right now.
- Optical image stabilisation unfortunately on the main camera.
- Quad-LED True Tone flash with Slow sync
- A wide-gamut colour capture
- Body and face detection
- Auto HDR
What DxOMark rates the iPhone 8 Plus Camera
DxOMark is known as the reference for image quality so it would be wise to pay heed to what they say about cameras in general. However, the subject at hand is the iPhone 8 Plus and they’ve given it a score of 94.
Let that sink in: 94 is the highest score ever so far and it just beat out Google’s Pixel and HTC’s U11. It also beat its baby brother’s (iPhone 8) score of 92.
Below are some of the pictures that were taken on the iPhone 8 Plus by team DxOMark.
For a challenging scene, the iPhone 8 Plus handles it very well
It performs in tricky and mixed lighting situations too
HDR pictures also look really good from the phone as you can see how well the highlights stand out in contrast to the shading
Accurately rendered colours are also bright and pop out on the iPhone 8 Plus
This would make it the best camera on a smartphone in the market right now. Overall, it features excellent image quality and great zoom capabilities. As mentioned earlier, the Portrait Mode is a clear winner for those trying to tell more intimate stories about their subjects.
It will be interesting to see how this phone compares against its bigger sibling, the iPhone X, when it releases.
