Audi unveils enormous 6-metre long, six-door A8 L
Audi has taken the wraps off its latest limousine, a 6.36-metre long version of the A8, which has been specially designed for a European customer.
The bespoke A8 L (the ‘L’ standing for long wheelbase) has enough room inside for six occupants and took Audi a year to engineer and develop. Those close to the project claim the lengthy Audi A8 L benefits from the low weight of the production model’s body, which uses an Audi Space Frame design and is made almost entirely from aluminium. For the built-to-order version, the engineers extended the side sills and centre tunnel using extruded aluminium sections.
A double rear bulkhead separates the passenger compartment from the luggage compartment; the roof incorporates additional aluminium profiled tubes and cross-braces.
Interior niceties include individual sun visors, ensuring the occupants don’t overheat, while seating rows two and three feature electrically adjustable individual seats. The third row has a continuous centre console, a Rear Seat Entertainment display and a cool box.
The one-off vehicle is powered by a 3.0 TFSI engine, which develops 306bhp and up to 440 Nm of torque. This propels the saloon from 0 to 62 mph in 7.1 seconds and up to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
Autocar.co.uk claims the discerning customer is thought to have paid at least €350,000 (£280,000), which considering it took engineers a year to develop, seems pretty reasonable.
It seems that regular luxury sedans aren’t enough for some customers. The A8 L is one of the best full length luxury sedans with a super luxurious cabin, however for one Audi customer the size of theAudi A8 L just wasn’t enough. It has been confirmed that the German car maker has come out with a unique one-off A8 L model for a special unidentified customer.
The model is being called the A8 L extended, and measures 6.36 metres in length and has a wheelbase of 4.22 metres, which is about a metre longer than the standard A8 L. The car also has three rows of seats with six individual seats, and they all face forward. The car uses an aluminium spaceframe body to keep the weight low at 2,418kg.
The roof features a 2.4 metre glass panel to make the interior feel more spacious and the cabin is finished in Valcona leather. Powering this big Audi limousine is a 3.0-litre TFSI petrol engine that can produce 310bhp and 440Nm of torque and it’s mated with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and has Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system. Audi claims that the car can sprint from 0-100kmph in just 7.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 250kmph.
This customer must be someone really loyal to the brand since the manufacturer has gone all out to make this special car for him or her. There is no word yet if Audi will continue to make such models for customers who find this interesting.
While we were expecting the A8L Extended to motivated by either a V8 or W12 engine, under the bonnet there’s the company’s relatively modest turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 hooked up to an eight-speed automatic and a full-time all-wheel drive system.
With 228kW of power and 440Nm of torque on hand, the six-door A8 is said to be able to run from 0-100km/h in 7.1 seconds and hit an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. The A8L Extended rides on 15-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels, with stopping power provided by the same braking package that’s used in the S8.
