OFW gives birth on board PAL flight from Dubai; flight diverted to India
MANILA – Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight PR669 from Dubai to Manila was diverted to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, India, to rush a 40-year old Filipina Overseas Worker (OFW) who gave birth on board the jetliner.
The cabin crew identified the woman as Mary Grace Alejandro, 7 months pregnant and traveling with her 16-year-old son.
When she experienced abdominal pain, the pilots and crew announced to all passengers on board that they are landing in India to give medical attention to Mary Jane who is about to give birth.
She eventually gave birth during the flight, assisted by cabin crew.
After giving birth, Mary Jane began exhibiting signs if weakness while her baby girl, born prematurely at 7 months, was described as in delicate condition. This prompted a flight diversion to the nearest airport – Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, India.
Upon landing in Hyderabad at 340AM (MNL time), the group was rushed to the Apollo Hospital, accompanied by representatives from Aero Technical, which handles passenger services.
Mary Jane, who lost consciousness en route to hospital, regained it and was declared in stable condition.
The baby girl is currently on ventilator support and under observation; later, officials said the infant was alright and is projected to have full recovery in six weeks.
Mary Jane’s husband and sister are set to arrive in Hyderabad tomorrow (Monday) to join Grace.
